1307: Water Filters | Skeptical Sunday

April 5, 2026·57 min·3 clips
Jessica Wynn explains that alkaline water cannot change your blood pH — and if it actually could, you would drop dead.
Water filters sound reassuring. The catch, Jessica Wynn explains, is that a neglected filter can become part of the problem instead of the fix. Jordan reacts about how most people would: disbelief, disgust, then a quick turn toward what to do next. Old pitchers need memory. Newer systems may have sensors, but older water pitchers rely on somebody remembering to change the filter. Slow filtering is a warning. Bad taste is another. By then, the filter may already be making the water worse. The fridge is not magic. Jessica calls these pitchers small bacterial ecosystems, a plain little phrase that makes the whole thing harder to ignore. Then the episode gets into plastic. Hot water can break down pitcher material, so washing one that way may release microplastics into the container. Replacing the filter is not the whole job either. The pitcher itself may need replacing every couple of years. Microplastics get tiny. The episode defines them as pieces under five millimeters, with some breaking down below one millimeter. That changes the stakes, because some particles can slip through even strong filtration systems. Filtered does not mean perfect. Reverse osmosis does the best job, but Jessica still treats it as reduction, not a clean finish line. Researchers are still studying what long term exposure means for health. Plastic containers add the annoying twist: a bottle, pitcher, or cap can bring plastic into the cleaner water routine. The takeaway stays simple. A filter is not a permanent shield. It is a device that needs attention before it becomes the thing you were trying to avoid.

As heard by us

A practical, mildly unsettling check on what water filters are really doing.

Jordan Harbinger and Jessica Wynn treat water filters and purifiers as a plainspoken Skeptical Sunday topic, not a clean-tech sales pitch. The episode sticks to the basics: what filtration does, what it does not do, when to replace filters, how an old pitcher system can slip…
