The Problem of Sleeplessness

·29 min·1 clip
Philippians 4 says, 'do not be anxious about anything' and promises peace that guards hearts and minds.
Jeff Kavins opens with the day after Christmas and the familiar clutter of a holiday house. He says sleeplessness is worth talking about because plenty of people deal with it. The holidays may make it worse, but the problem is not only seasonal. Sleep matters year round. He ties it to weight loss, well being, thinking, and the body's work of cleansing and rebuilding itself. He treats that as ordinary and important, not as a side issue. He then gives a pointed example about sending a consequential email late at night. In his telling, that can feel like handing someone a double shot coffee right before bed. That is not fair. From there he moves into worry as a major source of sleeplessness. He follows worry with anxiety and treats the two as closely linked. Then he turns to sin. He says sin causes insomnia. He cites Psalm 36:4 and Proverbs 4:14 to show that evil and restless sleep are tied together. He applies that to sin at work, at home, with finances, and in relationships. His point is blunt: sin disintegrates a person. He brings in Pope John Paul II's line that sin is spiritual suicide. He then widens the frame to the ordinary nightly habits that wreck sleep. Drink, diet, and TV make his list. Social media scrolling joins them too. He warns that a night full of screens, sugar, and noise is a bad path to rest. He promises solutions and then comes back with a practical challenge. Give the last half hour of the night to the Lord. Do not give it to TV, a phone, or food. He ends by praying for the listener to search the heart, repent, and let go of control. He asks for Mary's intercession and closes with a familiar Catholic prayer.
