The Jeff Cavins Show (Your Catholic Bible Study Podcast) · Ascension

Humility Is a Powerful Virtue

·30 min·1 clip
"God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
Jeff Cavins opens by saying the show is about discipleship, Scripture, and living what Jesus taught. The point is not just to be good or happy, but to honor Jesus and do his will. He warns that trouble often starts when people move against that will. From there, he turns to humility, a virtue he has been thinking about for about ten days. A recent pilgrimage to Poland and the Czech Republic gives him the immediate context. He treats that trip as an example of how humility can shape a people's history, especially under tyranny. Poland's experience under communism becomes a case where humility worked as hidden strength. He names John Paul II, Edith Stein, and Maximilian Kolbe as saints who showed that strength. Jesus is the larger model behind all of it. The Incarnation itself is God humbling himself to become human. Jeff pauses over Jesus' thirty silent years as humility lived inside ordinary family life. He cites Catechism paragraph 564 for that point. He also points to Jesus' baptism in the Jordan as a humble beginning in the lowest place on earth. That baptism marks the start of public ministry at age thirty. The temptation in the wilderness belongs to the same pattern. Jesus washing feet and teaching that the greatest in the kingdom must become like a child extend the lesson further. Jeff keeps bringing the teaching back to choice. Humility means not lifting yourself up, not getting puffed up, and instead choosing God's will. He applies that to home, marriage, parenting, work, and even spending money. He breaks to promise more practical help, then closes with prayer and a reminder to use the Ascension app and share it with others.
