The Act Out - S02E07 - Cj ”Sedman” Carter

·38 min·3 clips
Twenty years of professional comedy touring without a single TV credit - and he wears it as a badge of honor.
Duck opens by welcoming CJ Sedman Carter to The Act Out. He calls him a very special guest and notes that CJ has traveled across the country a bit and has been doing comedy for 20 years. The two trade quick praise and joke about the many names CJ carries. CJ puts it simply: people have different names and different sides, depending on the day. Duck then moves to the Single Mingle Show, which he says he has been watching and wanted to dig into. CJ explains that it is a game show for singles and non-singles. He traces the idea back to Dallas, where a friend named Tech G, also known as Garland Norris, kept inviting him to singles events. CJ says he was doing comedy and was dead broke, and the $45 entry fee made the whole thing feel absurd when he could get into a club for free. The event did not impress him, but it gave him material and a direction. From there, he started shaping his own version of the night. That version became the Single Mingle Show, which he has been doing for 14 years. CJ says he has only taken it seriously for the last four years and was mostly bullshitting for the other 10. Duck presses on control, and CJ pushes back. He says the crowd runs everything. That is not a slogan for him; it is the rule the show lives by. The only fixed rules he names are simple: drink, laugh, and have a good time. CJ says he is the emcee, even though he created the games and built the format. The episode leaves him sounding like a comic who trusts the room, leans into the chaos, and knows how to turn a bad singles event into a live act that keeps working.
