431a Afterlives

May 4, 2025·32 min·2 clips
Why were the Duke and Duchess of Albemarle considered 'too serious and thrifty' for Charles II's frivolous court?
Afterlives can be awkward. The host turns the Restoration into a brisk reckoning, following people who helped bring down one king and then watched another come home. Thomas Fairfax gets one of the sharpest passages. He helped defeat Charles I, helped Charles's son return, and expected no reward. Fair enough. His discomfort over the regicides' executions lands cleanly, especially since responsibility might have reached him too. Anne Fairfax matters here. Her refusal to let Thomas touch the regicide probably saved his life, which gives the family coda some bite. Then come the old operators. The host moves to the smoother political survivors, including "old subtlety," said to be smooth as a butterbox. That line works. The Presbyterians get their turn too. They fought Charles I, opposed his execution, resisted the Protectorate, and helped form the parliament that invited Charles back. No tidy moral ledger appears. Restoration politics left rewards, punishments, compromises, and ironies scattered unevenly. Cromwell's family closes the frame. Some lived quietly, some lived well, and one age-at-death detail becomes a dry little pub quiz trap. The host admits the list could keep going, then stops before the special becomes a wander through every surviving name.
