Episode 331 - The Last Hope

June 20, 2025·27 min·2 clips
John VIII Palaiologos bet everything on reuniting with the Catholic Church to save Byzantium from Ottoman conquest.
Manoel Palaiologos dies in 1425. The host uses the death as a measuring stick: one reign, one lifetime, and still the same grim trap for Romania. Manoel had travelled, negotiated, schemed, written, fought, and endured. For all that, the empire is still caught in a fight that began before he ruled. John inherits the narrowing road. Florence offers a way out, but only if churchmen swallow a union many of them resent. The liturgy is celebrated in public. Then Patriarch Joseph dies just before the agreement is made, leaving no one strong enough to keep the church in line. Marcos Eugenicos refuses to sign. That refusal gives the anti-Latin anger a face, and returning churchmen carry the mood back to Constantinople. The court keeps its head down. There is no grand celebration, because the authorities know union with Rome could set people off. Demetrios spots his chance. Posing as orthodoxy's defender, he brings in Turkish help and blockades Constantinople. It does not hold. He is arrested, but the mess says plenty about Roman politics: even survival cannot make the family behave. Pope Eugenios keeps his bargain. With Eastern Christians back under his authority, he calls a crusade against the Turks oppressing them. For the host, this is the last chance to break the Ottoman grip. Then the story takes a dry little turn. While the crusade is being prepared, the Romans are somehow retaking territory and planning expansion in the Peloponnese. The end tightens: John is buried, Constantine the 11th waits as emperor, Mehmed the 2nd waits as sultan, and the final siege is all that is left.
