A Piece of Fate

November 10, 2022·45 min·4 clips
McKenna describes aiming for Morgan's spine with an axe, then struggles with the guilt of killing.
Morgan's death hangs over the room. Someone wants proof that it meant something helpful, and the answer lands cold: comfort is not coming, and the future is already out of reach. Useful, in the worst possible way. That grim answer gives way to a fight where everyone seems one bad move from disaster. Thomas turns out to be a surprise martial artist. The other McKenna protects Nissa, treats mercy like a bad suggestion, and makes a serrated bread knife do tactical work it was never built for. The cultists keep pushing in. Tasers, armor, tendon strikes, headbutts, and shouted orders turn the whole thing into frantic rescue math. Nissa becomes the point. While Thomas and the other McKenna are stuck fighting, cultists stun Alfie and drag Nissa toward the door. McKenna tries to get to her. The other McKenna throws the knife, misses the useful end, and blames the weapon like the bread knife is the night's big systems failure. It is still a bread knife. The joke lands right in the middle of bodies dropping, because this world apparently schedules slapstick during abductions. Alfie wakes up confused. Thomas checks on him, gets the update nobody wants, and learns Nissa is gone. The other McKenna regrets holding back. Her logic is ugly but clean: if killing had been allowed, maybe the cultists would not have escaped. There is no time to sit with that. The response becomes calls, trucks, Riley, McKenna, movement, and whatever comes after a kidnapping when the future is already acting smug.

The story puts its cast in the middle of a grim scramble, where a death, a kidnapping, and a cultist assault all press in at once. Morgan's death keeps shadowing the conversation, and the central question never really shifts: what can still be changed when the wild hunt is…
