Shot Down

July 17, 2023·37 min·3 clips
Stravko tells Gabi that every experienced hunter before her died trying to kill the cockatrice, and she is the Order's last hope.
Berkus is no fantasy citadel. Gabi arrives ready for the Order post to match the stonework and pastel grandeur around it, but the place is modest, domestic, and stubbornly unromantic. War, here, lives in plain rooms. That contrast sets the mood: no ceremony, just people working with whatever shelter, horses, and nerve they still have. The road south gets worse. Gabby studies the trees and realizes fear is not the problem. She has already accepted the monster ahead. The land is the problem. She knows open prairie, brushy creeks, fields, corrals, and sightlines clean enough for a shot. Here, the woods crowd her. The ground rolls. A trick shot that might work somewhere else starts to look far too close to impossible. So she speaks up. Stravko translates, and Bogomila answers like someone who has spent a lifetime cutting doubt down fast. Gabby is called a fraud. It hits harder than it should, burning through her usual grit and making her feel small under the older woman's cold stare. The monster stays mostly offstage, which makes the human pressure sharper. Before the hunt can even begin, Gabby has to prove she belongs there. Then talk gives way to motion. Disaster throws Gabby and horse into leaf litter. Sky and trees break apart above her. Pain goes white. The ending lands on impact and blackout, with the mission caught between pride, bad terrain, and whatever is still waiting in the woods.

As heard by us

A grim hunt where terrain, pride, and one bad choice all start drawing blood.

Shot Down follows Gabi from Berkus into a hunt that keeps sliding out of reach. The Order post is plain in a way that works, and that matter-of-fact note sets the mood early. This is a story about the job, not ceremony.
