Gabi levels her rifle at Stravko and gives him one choice: help her kill the cockatrice, or she shoots him in the front rather than the back.
Leaves move above Gabby. The fall has ended against a tree, hard enough to leave her counting ribs, breath, and damage before heroics can start again. The horse is done. By twilight, Gabby and Stravko are dealing with a dour villager who sees the animal's ruined leg more clearly than their need to keep moving. His offer is ugly. A quarter of the horse's worth means meat, not rescue, because she cannot ride, haul, or earn her keep without costly care. Gabby takes it as betrayal. She has already threatened the man, and suspicion comes fast when the mission depends on a lame animal and a hostile sale. Stravko hears something else. His translation turns the scene from a bad bargain into a shortage problem, with the village's gratitude for the Order trapped inside what little it has left. The cockatrice has eaten well: three people, six cows, and half a flock of sheep since it came into the region. Respect does not buy horses. The army came through the day before and took the village's mounts, leaving shared ox teams and one strained resource for planting. Gabby freezes at that. The hunt still matters, but the villagers' refusal to pay fairly starts to look less like spite than arithmetic. The episode keeps the horror close to the ground. Injury, transport, livestock, and requisition do as much damage as the creature beyond the village. No victory speech comes. Just Gabby, facing the cost of killing one monster in a place already being picked clean.

As heard by us

A cockatrice hunt shaped by war, scarcity, and hard choices.

This episode treats war as the bill that never stops arriving. An injured rider, a lame horse, a village running on very little, and a cockatrice that has already killed people and livestock turn the story into something closer to triage than adventure.
