Dr. Robert Duff sits down in person with Amy Andrea Martinez, a sociology professor he met while traveling. Martinez starts with where her parents came from and how that history still shapes the way she moves through the world and through her work. She says there is no way to forget that background now that she is a professor who gets to travel the world. That grounding matters when the conversation turns to family crisis. Her brother was charged with attempted murder on gang-related charges, and she had no clue he was involved in gang life back home. The news comes through a phone call that feels off before it becomes clear what is happening. She can hear something in her father's voice and knows right away that something is wrong. He does not usually show emotion unless he is angry, so even the crack in his voice lands hard. She tells him to hurry home and then sits in the car, panicking with almost no information. When she gets back, her aunts and cousins are in her brother's room and her mother is on the floor crying. That image stays with her. She remembers walking in, feeling her heart drop, and trying to make sense of what had just happened. The episode does not rush past the shock. Martinez also remembers being only eighteen at the time and, later, looking back with fresh eyes on how young that really was.
