Avoiding Common Pitfalls: Four Reasons Competent People Fail In Business

·44 min·4 clips
Dan Perry explains why 40% of Americans are obese and how it relates to failing at business.
Why do capable people still fail? Dan starts from a blunt place: the handyman business already works, so the job is not to invent a new model. You do not need luck, either. He keeps circling back to two basics, steady effort and doing the right work, because talent gets stuck fast when one of those is missing. Goal setting comes first, and he wants more than a loose wish. Look at why you want the business. Replacing income may be enough. Maybe you want out of a job you hate, a specific income target, or more control over your time. The goal does not have to sound fancy. It just has to be clear enough to tell you what to do next. Dan points to SMART goals and says the target should at least be attainable and time bound, since impossible goals stop feeling useful pretty quickly. Then the question becomes action. Once the goal has a name, what actually moves you toward it? You can research on your own, but Dan warns that this can turn into a swamp of conflicting advice and hard lessons. A mentor is cleaner if you can find one. Regular guidance from someone who has done it can cut down the noise. Since that is not always easy to get, he gives the backup plan: follow a proven system, keep showing up for it, and quit acting like every decision needs to be invented fresh. He closes with the January 15, 2024 webinar, his email list, and the written version at handymanstartup.com/44.

The episode treats the handyman business as a model that works if someone keeps showing up and focuses on the right work. It is practical about sequence too: doing things in the right order can save time and usually leads to cleaner results. The larger point is plain enough.
