Gašper Beguš on Why Language Doesn’t Make Humans Special

January 24, 2026·1 hr 3 min·4 clips
Beguš describes Alex the parrot inventing the word 'banerry' — banana plus cherry — because he couldn't pronounce the letter P in 'apple.'
The opening claim is meant to knock things slightly off balance. If language is an externalization algorithm, the guest argues, animals may have complicated inner lives and humans may simply be bad at finding the doorway in. Alex the parrot is the obvious test case. Once Alex learned enough of a human channel to count and handle complex operations, the neat human-animal divide started to look less neat. The host keeps widening the question without rushing it. What is language, exactly? Is human use different in kind, or just easier for humans to recognize? And how seriously should apes, parrots, dogs, birds, and whales be taken when the comparison has often been too dismissive? Recursion gets the longest look. For decades, the guest says, human language seemed categorically different because sentences can tuck one element inside another of the same type. Yasha said that Gaspard said that whales have language can keep growing by adding another speaker, and then another. Animals have not clearly shown that structure. Still, the guest is wary of turning missing evidence into a final answer when so much wild communication remains hard to study. The present-only account also takes a hit. Bonobos and other language-trained animals could refer to things in another room. Alex adds the stranger example, reportedly inventing a word for apple by linking banana-like taste with cherry-like appearance. AI becomes the next stress test, with the host asking whether different training setups could change future systems and whether consciousness is already there or still needs some further threshold.

As heard by us

A lively challenge to the idea that language cleanly separates humans from animals, with AI making the question harder to contain.

Yascha Mounk's conversation with Begus takes a familiar argument about human uniqueness and makes it feel freshly unsettled. The episode starts with language itself, then moves through animal communication, parrots, apes, dogs, birds, whales, and the newer problem of artificial…
