#80 - Week in the Life of a Flower Shop Owner

·47 min·2 clips
Opening a flower shop means 6-9 months of being there constantly to build systems.
Sydney and Audrey open by framing the flower shop as a quiet, serene space that depends on a lot of work people never see. They talk about how the shop is meant to feel spa-like even when the people running it are handling plenty behind the scenes. Compost, trash, and bucket washing come up right away as part of the daily routine. The conversation keeps circling back to the gap between what customers notice and what has to happen to keep the place running. They explain that flowers often arrive delivered to the shop or are picked up already in water. Even then, those flowers still need to be unrubber-banded, checked over, and processed to shop standards. Sydney and Audrey stress that the fewer times a flower gets touched, the better. They compare that with harvesting, where cutting, stripping, and conditioning can leave the stem ready to use immediately. The talk shifts to the ways the shop has tried to organize weekly work. They say they have tried many times to assign tasks by day of the week. Tuesday would be pedestal day, Wednesday wrap day, and so on. That system sounded tidy in theory. It fell apart once flowers started selling and arrangements had to be remade out of order. They point out that a pedestal made on Monday might need to be completely taken apart and rebuilt by Thursday. A Monday plan only works if nothing sells. That is not how a flower shop works. They describe the current solution as more flexible and much more realistic. The last-done sheet lets them initial work as it happens and keep track of what still needs to be redone. Day-of-the-week stickers also help with timing and turnover. The result is a system that matches the pace of actual shop life instead of fighting it. They close by noting that some customers are surprised by how different their approach is. Not everyone loves that difference, and that is fine with them.
