Polski Sklep: A Recent History of the Polish Shop

August 15, 2025·42 min·4 clips
Maria reveals how a Polish shop in Peterborough welcomes customers from all cultures, not just Polish.
The story begins with smell. Smoked cured sausage, sour pickles and teas turn a local Polish shop into the doorway to a larger history. Peterborough draws the presenter back. She remembers living there at 21, when the city's Polish community stayed with her. The shop becomes a kind of record. Along Lincoln Road, Polish food shops carry stories of migration, community and cultural identity. Herbal tea slows everything down. The guest describes a split in Poland between shop-bought teas and the older habit of foraging for herbs. Pronunciation matters too. Polish letter clusters, including rz, give the shop some of its intimidation and charm. Katarzyna names herself. Her memory of learning to spell that name at nine gives the conversation a small, human turn. Then history slips in. Her father's parents ran a shop outside Warsaw during the Second World War, when food could mean survival. Produce was practical, not decorative. Knowing how to secure, source and understand food gave someone real standing in a time of scarcity. Britain carries that inheritance forward. When her father arrived in the UK in the 1980s, meat processing, smoked meats and sausages pointed him toward his own ambition. He wanted a shop. By the late 90s, that had become a deli in Ealing, bringing family memory onto a new street. The ending comes back home: pierogi, sour cream and a child reaching for another bite.

As heard by us

A warm, wandering visit to Polish shops, where herbal teas, migration stories and pierogi turn a storefront into family history.

Polski Sklep treats the Polish shop as a place you can smell before you understand it: smoked sausage, sour pickles, herbal teas, then pierogi at the table.
