The Edge of Sleep · QCODE & Wood Elf

Escape | Episode 7

October 29, 2019·25 min·1 clip
An old man dreams of a coral giant guarding a door where something pounds, warning of a coming nightmare.
The episode opens with a mythic prologue about an old man who dreams he is a whale visiting Talandian, the god of dreams, who guards a sealed door in the deep ocean. The narrative then flashes back four days before the catastrophe, showing the old man convincing his son Felix to leave their mining job and return to their ancestral jungle in Papua New Guinea. In the present timeline, Dave tells his group — Linda, Mateo, and Katie — that he believes an old man in Papua New Guinea is waiting for them and is the key to surviving the epidemic in which sleeping causes death. Mateo agrees to pilot the group, acknowledging that flying sleep-deprived violates FAA regulations but that dying in place is the alternative. Linda calculates a 10% chance Dave is right and decides those are the best odds available. Before they can leave their location, five sleepwalking people surround the building. An elderly woman with stab wounds enters, eyes closed, carrying a knife, and calls Dave by name before attacking. Linda shoots her. The group sprints to their van under attack from more sleepwalkers. At the airport, Mateo selects a Cessna Citation S590 worth approximately $100,000 per flight to make the direct trans-Pacific crossing. Katie is visibly deteriorating from sleep deprivation, compounded by earlier narcotic use. Dave keeps her alert by walking her around and promising to dance with her through the entire flight. While Mateo fuels the plane, Katie locks herself in the car. Through the window she tells Dave there is nothing he can do and asks him not to blame himself. She lies back, transforms, and tries the door. Linda forces the group onto the plane. The episode ends as they lift off, leaving Katie behind.
