389: Life and Business Lessons from the "Don Draper of Direct Mail" Drew Sanocki

November 3, 2023·45 min·4 clips
Drew Sanocki says his plan for entrepreneurship in his forties was to buy cash-flowing businesses, install operators, and never be the one working nine to five — until Postpilot accidentally took off.
Austin starts with Drew's operator track record. Drew bought and turned around Karma Loop and Auto Anything, then put money into an app that became Postpilot. Austin says Postpilot grew from five employees last year to more than 100 this year, with growth above 10% month over month. The conversation does not stay in pure scoreboard mode, though. Austin keeps the lens wide: how Drew is building Postpilot, how he shows up for his kids and family, how fitness fits in, and what the stress of the job actually feels like. Drew begins with customer lifetime value. In turnaround e-commerce, the math is tighter. In SaaS, subscriptions change the base layer, and some Postpilot customers have spent a million dollars. The 80/20 rule still shows up. Postpilot has about 9,000 brands on the platform, but Drew says about 10% of them drive the business. That changes the sales motion. When the best customers are worth that much, Drew can slow down. He can sell more carefully, visit customers, and run city meetups. You would not usually do that in DTC. The economics make a concierge model feel reasonable instead of ridiculous. The valuation piece is just as different. Drew contrasts his private equity and DTC background, where cash flow and profitability mattered most, with software, where revenue multiples push the company toward top-line growth. The money goes back into the business. Postpilot is not being run like a lifestyle business where the owners pull cash out while it grows. Austin brings it back home by asking about Drew's nine- and eleven-year-old kids. That thread stays in the room. Drew is still an operator, but not a cardboard founder. Near the end, he says he gets stressed like everybody else, which fits the episode: practical tactics, real numbers, and the family side of the job. The close returns to Postpilot's holiday offer, with campaigns built out and four months for the price of three.
