Selling Outcomes Instead of Services

·25 min·1 clip
Transformations are the next level of value—companies guide people to change and achieve their aspirations
Features are a tough place to stand out. Joe Pine argues that transformation is the next practical premium: a business helps customers become different, rather than simply giving them a nicer experience. Simple idea, harder sale. A customer may want the result and still resist the change it asks of them. Pine is pretty direct about that tension. He ties it to the hero's journey, where people often refuse the call before they are ready to move. Jantz pulls the idea back into the day to day of service businesses. Who does the work? What can repeat? What has to stay personal? Transformation can sound expensive, custom, and a little precious. Jantz presses on whether a business can productize something that seems to need white glove attention for every client. Pine says yes. He points first to AI, then to books, toolkits, coaching, speeches, and workshops as ways to make the work more scalable without flattening every customer into the same case. The episode keeps its feet on the ground. Transformation is treated less like a slogan and more like an operating model: diagnose the aspiration, build the experience, notice timing and readiness, then support the change after the sale. The customer still has agency. The provider acts as a guide when the customer is ready. For service businesses, the useful part is the discipline: name the customer's aspiration, create repeatable ways to guide the work, and help the change stick after the first engagement. Pine closes by sending listeners to LinkedIn and Strategic Horizons for more on bringing these ideas into a business.
