Bombings in Lebanon

·23 min·2 clips
Karim's house was blown up, but he explains how Lebanese have grown used to living in perpetual conflict.
Rob Young opens with Lebanon under attack again. He looks back to a December 2024 BBC Conversation about an Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, then brings the listener into a present where civilians are once more trying to stay out of danger. People are already leaving. The Lebanese Health Ministry says the latest conflict has killed more than 1,000 people and displaced more than a million. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah, which the programme describes as an Iranian-backed militia and political party. The focus stays on the people living with the fallout. James Reynolds hears from Sarah, who lives east of Beirut, Tasnim, who lives in Beirut and has family in the south, and Karim, a PhD student. Their accounts are blunt and lived-in. One speaker says history is repeating itself with more advanced means, but the same generational pattern. Planning becomes a daily survival skill. Karim says people in Lebanon may carry three, four, or five contingency plans at once. That kind of readiness can toughen people, but it also drains them. He says the cost reaches beyond fear into the economy and the country’s ability to move forward politically, institutionally, and technologically. Reform becomes harder when everyone is busy working out the next escape route. Karim argues that a stronger Lebanon would need political struggle and a fairer social, political, and economic order. Bombing gets in the way of that work. He is especially sharp about the idea, held by some in Washington, that a country can be bombed into reform. He calls that tragic. The programme later checks in with Sarah, Tasnim and Karim, and Rob Young says all three were thankfully okay. A final note explains that the GCC means Arab nations bordering the Persian Gulf, including Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, which have recently faced drone and missile attacks from Iran.
