Esra Ozturk: Building Privacy-First Fan Identity | Ep 1168

·11 min·1 clip
Esra Ozturk reveals why she now focuses on healthy engagement instead of growth at all costs.
Host Brian opens by introducing Ozturk and her background spanning Instagram Reels at Meta, Uber, Zillow, and Instacart before her current role at Lufa. Ozturk describes three product principles that have remained constant across all her roles: beginning with the human moment the product serves rather than the feature being built; designing for the full ecosystem including all sides of the marketplace rather than optimizing for one actor; and maintaining a small legible set of success metrics that the entire team can recite and use for daily decisions. She notes that what has evolved over her career is her thinking about attention and trust, moving away from growth at all costs toward healthy engagement that respects user time, data, and long-term well-being. Lufa’s product is described as a loyalty layer built natively inside encrypted messaging conversations between creators, brands, and fans. As fans take meaningful actions such as attending live streams, buying tickets, or sharing content, these actions are quietly recognized and mapped to fan status without requiring a separate app or login. The fan passport concept allows this status to travel across partner ecosystems so a fan recognized by one creator’s brand can carry that reputation to a festival, hospitality partner, or another creator without starting from zero. Ozturk distinguishes Lufa from traditional loyalty programs on three dimensions: it is not siloed to one brand, it recognizes participation and advocacy rather than only spend, and it is privacy-respecting with encrypted data minimization. Looking ahead, she describes three shifts she expects to shape the next decade: messaging becoming the primary operating system for commerce and community; wallets and digital identity moving into the background so users never have to think about the infrastructure; and AI sitting between brands and fans as an intelligence layer that predicts churn, identifies high-value advocates, and enables respectful targeted loyalty.
