21: Ripples

September 8, 2025·44 min·2 clips
Jonathan Tozer describes standing on the alien disc of the Church of Panoptes and realising: 'We are truly part of an enormous structure and only get to define ourselves within the very narrow margins in between these discs.'
Mary Ann Tozer becomes the whole map. The narrator knows an online search would be faster, and he also knows getting caught could turn ugly. So he stays in the van with the search party. Day after day, the same strange hunt circles Mary Ann and the watchmaker's key. It feels close for a moment, then hollow again. He has found something, but not enough to know what Mary Ann means or what he is meant to do with her. Fatigue starts making the loudest argument. Career damage, no sleep, and fear sit beside him in the van like plain facts. Then the story goes underground. A bodyguard brings him and the man he calls the vampire into an elevator that rattles shut. Every question suddenly has less room to breathe. Will the founder see through the trick? Do the rules protecting a deca-PI still count down there? The basement does not explain itself. Low ceilings, gray concrete, dim wall lights, paperwork, flip charts, and huge WDU maps make the search feel like office work with a threat under it. Guards hold the corners. At the center is a transparent box, thick enough to look defensive, with filters above and bright tiles below. The founder is inside. It is too clean, too controlled, and completely wrong. Power has made him afraid. He waves the narrator closer from inside the cube, and the danger just stays there, breathing.

As heard by us

A trapped search party and a glowing basement turn dread into logistics.

The episode tracks a man who starts out looking for Mary Ann Tozer and ends up pulled into the mechanics of the hunt, which gives the hour its pressure. He is tired, wary of Murnau for reasons he cannot quite name, and too far inside the search party to step back cleanly.
