Rain should not be falling here. The narrator walks into a deserted shopping mall that feels less like a real place than an old photo someone left out too long. Then a pale, creature-like man comes out of a dark shop and talks in a way that makes leaving feel like the smart choice. The job shrinks down to paper: a folded sheet with a rough print of an old photo, a young woman smiling from a driver's seat. Do not lose it. Someone will ask for it every morning, and losing it brings trouble. She is the watchmaker's key, supposedly the thing that can unlock all, which is the kind of answer that only makes the room colder. The narrator keeps hearing his mom's warning: do not get tangled in the mystery when the job is getting close to the founder. He needs a face, a hiding place, maybe a name, and enough proximity for an arrest warrant. The chain of access is ugly but clear. Find something useful, bring it to an elite, and only then can it move toward the founder. Across the WDU, fully analogue, that sounds nearly impossible. Then Murnau sits at the head of the long table with coffee while the others talk and eat. Nobody calls it danger, but the room already knows what it is.
