Who Is Winning the War in Iran?

Iran's mosaic defense allows it to keep fighting even after losing 90% of its missile capacity and top leaders.
Iran is still fighting. The episode opens on a war where the U.S. and Israel have badly damaged Iran's missile capacity, taken out key leaders, and disrupted central command, but still have not made the regime back down. Natalie Ketroef brings in Eric Schmidt to explain how Iran can keep pressuring the most powerful military in the world after absorbing that much damage. Schmidt's answer starts with the Strait of Hormuz. He says the danger there was not some surprise pulled from nowhere. The Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s had already shown why the strait mattered. What changed was the timing. American officials knew Iran might use it, but some were caught flat-footed by how fast and how broadly Iran moved once the regime seemed to think its survival was on the line. Ketroef stays with the strait because that is where the planning problem gets very concrete. A shutdown has caused extreme havoc, and Schmidt says U.S. readiness did not match the risk everyone supposedly understood. Naval assets were not where they needed to be. Mine sweeping capabilities were antiquated. Some ships were outside the Gulf, including two in Asia. There was no ready coalition either, which matters for options like tanker escorts. So the problem is not that officials missed the idea entirely. It is that knowing a risk exists is different from having the ships, tools, and partners lined up when the risk arrives sooner than expected. Ketroef presses Schmidt on whether Pentagon officials see that as a colossal failure. He says they do not. Their view is that the scenario was always in the plans, just not on this timeline. The episode lands in that uncomfortable gap. The U.S. and Israel have had real tactical success against Iran's military structure, but Iran can still disrupt the region in ways that force everyone else to scramble.
