From Foster Care to Dignity at Scale: A Conversation with Rob Scheer of Comfort Cases

·32 min
This episode features Rob Scheer, founder of Comfort Cases, in conversation with host Stephen Garten. Scheer is a former foster youth turned advocate who launched a national nonprofit. The discussion centers on transforming the foster care system through dignity and direct support. Scheer entered foster care due to abuse and aged out at 18, becoming homeless within 24 hours. He cites that a child enters foster care every two minutes in the U.S., totaling roughly 700 daily. Approximately 37% of children enter the system due to abuse, while others are removed for circumstances like poverty. Scheer highlights that former foster youth are twice as likely as combat veterans to suffer from PTSD. Only about 8% of foster youth currently earn a four-year college degree. He recalls a politician celebrating a reduction from 15% to 13% of children sleeping in offices or hotels, which he found appalling. Scheer shares his personal struggles, including drug addiction and suicide attempts after aging out, until a turning point at age 24. The inspiration for Comfort Cases came when his adopted children arrived with their belongings in trash bags. He asked a social worker, "What about some dignity?" Each Comfort Case backpack contains new pajamas, a hygiene kit, a book, a stuffed animal, and a blanket. The organization has delivered over 300,000 backpacks across all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico without federal funding. It operates on an average donor gift of $8 and has an annual budget near $6 million. A $25 donation provides two children with new pajamas. Scheer argues the system fails when a child enters care and proposes two key reforms: creating savings accounts from foster care payments for youths aging out and guaranteeing tuition for any college, not just in-state schools. The tone is passionate, conversational, and deeply personal, blending heartbreaking narrative with actionable solutions. Listeners interested in child welfare, trauma-informed advocacy, and grassroots nonprofit growth will find this compelling. Those seeking a light or purely analytical discussion might find the raw emotional content and systemic critiques challenging.
