How a local newsletter company is leveraging AI to cover hundreds of counties across the US

6AM City says its AI system works by “extractive generative” summarization, not by making up a whole newsletter.
6AM City began with a pretty clean transplant. Simon Owens sets up the company as Morning Brew-style newsletter writing brought into local news, starting in Greenville, South Carolina in 2016. At first, the model leaned hard on editors. The company hired local editors, built an audience in each city, and sold advertisers one market at a time. Then the playbook shifted. Ryan Heafy explains how 6AM City now uses AI to start newsletters in smaller, less populated areas, with human editors added after those newsletters hit certain thresholds. That is where the episode gets useful. This is not an AI-is-coming victory lap. Owens keeps pulling the conversation back to the unglamorous stuff: where the information comes from, how quality gets checked, and when a human editor needs to step in. The same thing happens with monetization. Ryan says local newsletter ads behave differently from national media buys. Flat-rate local campaigns can beat broader CPC-style campaigns because the advertiser cares about a specific place, not abstract reach. The numbers explain the appeal without making it sound easy. Ryan says some newsletters can bring in a million dollars a year from about 60,000 subscribers. That makes each market worth taking seriously. Self-serve ads get a practical pass, too. Owens asks whether advertisers still need a salesperson, and Ryan says pretty much anything a person can sell is also available in their portal. But habits matter. Owens compares it with Facebook and Google ads, where buyers already know the tools. Ryan still likes larger packages through sales, while the portal seems better suited to one-off mini articles, text ads, and smaller buys. The ending is more sober than splashy. Ryan says 6AM City is profitable, learned from earlier fast-growth mistakes, and plans to expand using profits at a calmer pace. So the AI story has a business spine: automate enough to cover more places, keep quality checks in the loop, and avoid burning capital just to look bigger.

A practical look at how 6AM City is testing AI-assisted local newsletters against the economics of city-by-city advertising.

6AM City co-founder Ryan Heafy lays out a grounded local-news expansion story: the company began with editor-led city newsletters and is now using AI to test smaller markets before adding human editors once those products justify the investment.
