The Bible Guys · Jeff Forester & Chris Zarbaugh

Bible Guys Classics: 1 Corinthians 9 Part 1

April 10, 2026·23 min·2 clips
Larry P. asks if sanctification and glorification are processes or events, sparking a centuries-old Christian debate.
The banter opens in theology mode. Larry P. sends in a Stump the Pastor question about sanctification and glorification, and the guys admit some listeners may not know what either word means. Then Paul moves into view. The passage asks whether a preacher has the right to be supported by the people receiving the ministry. The answer is yes. Chris and Jeff walk through Paul's examples from the temple and altar, where workers share in the offerings connected to their service. Then Paul refuses payment anyway. That is where the episode gets interesting, because Paul is not saying the right is fake. He is choosing not to use it. He would rather remove an obstacle. The guys spend time on his line about putting up with anything instead of blocking the good news about Christ. Jeff sees Paul as unusually positioned. Compared with someone like Peter, Paul may have needed a different kind of restraint so people would hear the gospel before questioning his motives. Chris keeps pulling the conversation back to balance. Churches should care for pastors and spiritual leaders without treating basic support as embarrassing. At the same time, the guys are not pretending abuse is rare or harmless. They name ministers who exploit people, including the kind selling a hanky on television for a million dollars. Still, abuse does not erase responsibility. Healthy support needs honest accountability. By the end, Paul's example is less about winning a compensation argument and more about giving up a real right when the gospel matters more.
