Episode 40 - The Dance with Death

March 9, 2022·27 min·2 clips
Maya faces Death as a Boddach and strikes a deal to keep Finn alive, but only inside the antique shop.
The episode opens with the narrator playing a game with her cat Kronos when the shop bell rings and Anora enters—an unexpected visitor who smells like autumn and the end of something. The narrator's familiar Reed also freezes when he recognizes the visitor is no ordinary customer. Anora leans on the counter and explains that Finn is in danger: his past has returned not just to haunt him but to kill him in retribution for his sins. The narrator mentally catalogues her questions about Anora's knowledge and motivation but asks nothing. Reed is the first to speak, questioning why they should believe her. Anora responds with a shrug—it is their choice, but are they willing to take the risk? Anora then gestures to the narrator's hand, indicating she will know where to find Finn via a ring, and leaves with a cryptic note that she does not usually give help without asking for something in return—framed as a warning or a promise. Alone, the narrator hesitates, questioning whether Finn deserves to be saved given his past and wondering whether Reed might want retribution rather than rescue. She decides she cannot live with herself if she does not try and heads for the door. Reed follows. A red string attached to the narrator's familiar ring leads them through the city to a derelict area called Murder Mile, down an alley to a building where they find Finn on the floor with an attacker standing over him. Reed immediately applies pressure to Finn's stab wounds. The narrator, feeling a calm focused anger, disintegrates the attacker's knife into dust, noting she has control over her power she lacked before. The attacker flees. Despite Reed's efforts, Finn dies, his last words a weak joke. In the silence after his death, a cloaked faceless figure—the Boddach of Scottish folklore—appears. Only Maya can see it. It greets her as Fate's Apprentice and confirms it takes the form of her childhood fear. When Maya begs it not to take Finn, the Boddach reveals Finn was not scheduled to die that day, which is why it arrived late. It offers a deal: because the antique shop is a neutral zone beyond normal rules, Finn can live within its boundaries indefinitely—but will die permanently the moment he steps outside. The room then shifts back to the shop and Finn breathes again. The episode closes with an out-of-story outro in which the creator explains the Boddach as a real creature from Scottish Gaelic folklore, announces a two-month hiatus, and mentions she may be moving back to Scotland from England.

As heard by us

A familiar shop visit curdles into grief, violence, and a darker shape of power.

The Antique Shop opens with a familiar kind of unease: a game cut short, an old face back in the frame, and the sense that the wrong person has stepped inside.
