Faith, Healing, and Chaplaincy with Nora Zaki

·1 hr 13 min·4 clips
A Muslim brother told me that he wanted to study theological studies at Harvard Divinity School to be a Muslim chaplain. And I was like, what?
Imam Tariq interviews Chaplain Nora Zaki about her journey to interfaith chaplaincy. Born in Ohio to an Egyptian doctor father and Catholic-convert mother, Nora was raised Muslim but experienced identity questions after her father's sudden death in 2007. At University of Florida studying Arabic, religion, and political science, she was active in MSA work during the 2010 Quran-burning controversy. After studying abroad in Jordan, she attended the ALIM program in 2013 where she discovered Muslim chaplaincy—previously unaware it existed. She studied with prominent scholars and completed clinical pastoral education at a Baptist hospital as the first Muslim chaplain there. She emphasizes the Islamic tradition of healing both heart and body (tabib al qalb and tabib al jassad), and how her interfaith background gives her unique empathy in spiritual healthcare work.
