The Battle of Stiklestad (1030)

November 22, 2024·40 min·3 clips
King Olaf's death by herring bone turns a historic battle into a farcical secret.
A haircut becomes a vanishing act. The cold open belongs to Kaylee Wilson, whose hair hides an absence before she gets offered a second life as a Komodo dragon tamer. Then Snorri has ash in his throat. He and his companion look back on Bjorn's burning funeral boat as spectacle and service, since the alleged Viking seems better suited to poetry than pillaging. The joke is practical, but oddly sweet. Bjorn has been spared wrestling, drinking, pillaging, and axe comparisons, so his fake death feels almost kind beneath all that smoke. Then the room finds an actual corpse. Snorri's confidence collapses into apology when he cannot revive the dead man in front of them. Grief gets a chair, briefly. The killer is salted herring, a tiny bone, and the kind of breakfast detail that punctures tragedy without making it vanish. Outside, the peasant army arrives. Arrows land close enough to make every spiritual crisis feel badly timed. Thorfinn will not move. A moment ago he seemed ready for violence, but now he sags into Christian resignation and starts asking about turning the other cheek. Nobody has time for theology. The panic tightens when the body in his lap turns out to be King Olaf, which makes the army's collapse suddenly and absurdly administrative. Leadership is the actual battlefield. Without Olaf, Thorfinn sees no cause left to defend, while everyone else tries to yank him back into the immediate danger. The excerpt later splinters into crossover chatter. A separate fantasy-party scene brings in spells, a three-eyed figure, and a Dungeons and Dragons promo, but the Amelia Project part stays with the Viking death-faking farce. It knows exactly how ridiculous it is. The fun is watching mythic history keep tripping over food hazards, workplace logistics, and grief that refuses to behave.
