Introducing Red Valley

Gordon Porlock warns Warren that the seed vault hides a dark secret about cryonic preservation.
Warren Gorby starts with arithmetic. His line manager sends him after figures that do not behave, which is how an accountant ends up wandering through a huge tech company with a seed bank attached. Nobody wants to answer him. The trip from one department to the next plays like office comedy at first, but the silence around him keeps getting heavier. Then Gordon Porlock appears. He is the unhappy company archivist, armed with recordings, explanations, and the air of a man who has been waiting far too long for someone to ask the wrong question. He starts by correcting the vocabulary. Cryogenics deals with extreme low temperatures. Cryonics is the colder little business of preserving human beings after death. Warren spots the obvious Walt Disney joke. Gordon has no time for it, especially while explaining a business built out of bodies, money, and stubborn optimism. The company owns one of these operations. On paper, Gordon says, people can spend their fortune having blood replaced with cryoprotectant in the hope of waking up later. That part is legal. What bothers him is the fantasy that the future will arrive clean and morally paid for. Some clients want more than preservation. They want to be frozen while still healthy, dodging death like a dull meeting and leaving other people with the bill. Warren tries to keep up. Gordon keeps pulling him away from ledgers and toward the Red Valley Seed Vault, where missing seeds start to sound like something worse than bad inventory. The tape is the hook: ragged evidence, strange research, and a corporate secret too big for Warren's accounting language. The excerpt sells Red Valley as dry, nasty science fiction with horror and mystery under the floorboards. Warren's own difficult past starts leaking into the present as the conspiracy opens below him. The closing excerpt jumps to The Crit Show, with monster-of-the-week panic, ghostly breathing, bad dice rolls, and Wednesday hunts for things in the dark.
