The Power of the Trio (ft. Trousdale live at USC)

October 3, 2025·49 min·4 clips
Trousdale explains how complaining about back pain led to writing their album's title track.
Nate Sloan opens with envy. Charlie Harding had already brought a live podcast into a student setting, so Nate treats his USC event like a friendly Los Angeles reply. Then the trio comes in, and the conversation gets more useful than glossy. This is about how three singers make records without scrubbing out all the human edges. Their old process was more piece by piece: lots of takes, little sections, overdubs, and careful comping on each instrument. It taught them plenty, but for Growing Pains they moved closer to the band rehearsal feel they knew from school. The record starts to sound more communal that way. Drums, electric guitar, and bass went down first, with acoustic guitar, keys, and other overdubs added later. That is the neat trick here. Instead of stacking parts until the song felt crowded, they listened for what was missing and stopped when it had enough. In Switched on Pop terms, the mechanism is arrangement as restraint. John Mark Nelson becomes the hinge. The group first remembers working with him on Movie Star from Out of My Mind, where his writing and communication made the collaboration unusually easy to trust. Since that worked, he came back as co-producer on Growing Pains and sent over the starting point for Over and Over. The lesson lands without making a speech. A trio can sound bigger by knowing when the band, the voices, and the room are already carrying it.
