Nachikethas asks his angry father who he will donate him to, and is told he is being given to Yama.
This episode of 'Story Time with Asha Teacher' presents the Malayalam story of Nachikethas from Hindu mythology. It begins with Nachikethas as the son of Vajashravas, who becomes curious about aging and death after observing birds and a deer. His existential doubts lead him to ask his guru, who admits he doesn't know the answer. Nachikethas is called home for his father's Vishwa Jitta ritual, where donations are made. Noticing his father donating only sick and dry items, Nachikethas questions why he isn't being donated, as he is his father's most precious possession. In anger, his father says he will give Nachikethas to Yama. Nachikethas takes this seriously and goes to Yama's world. He waits three days without food or water until Yama returns. Yama, impressed by his dedication, offers three gifts. Nachikethas's first wish is for his father's peace, which Yama grants. His second is to learn the fire prayer for heavenly entry, which Yama teaches and names after him. For the third, Nachikethas insists on knowing the truth about life after death, despite Yama's attempts to dissuade him with worldly offers. Yama eventually explains using a chariot analogy: the body is the chariot, the mind is the charioteer, the senses are the horses, and the self is the rider. This teaches that the self is distinct from the body and mind, and controlling the senses leads to consciousness. Nachikethas accepts this knowledge, returns to his father, and shares it with others. The story is based on the Kathopanishad, where Yama guides Nachikethas in understanding Atma Tattva (the self principle). The narration is immersive, with vivid descriptions of rituals and dialogues. Themes include truth-seeking, sacrifice, and philosophical inquiry into mortality and the self. The episode concludes with a prompt for the next story.
