A reporter finds Cindy Day, Matthew's old girlfriend, and tells her he died alone in the woods.

Three cop cars are outside. Cindy is getting home from school after enrolling at the local community college, and the house already feels wrong. She thinks of Dorr first. Before this, Dorr has been checking VIN numbers on cars he recently imported, and about six come back stolen. That is the nightmare he keeps running into. The host keeps the line clear: Dorr was not stealing the cars himself, according to the narration. The problem is harder to box up. He says he did not know the goods were stolen, then tried to hand over what he knew before it landed on him. He starts calling law enforcement. The FBI, the county sheriff, and U.S. Customs all look like possible ways out of a mess he cannot solve alone. He wants Cindy protected. He also wants someone to use his information without leaving him exposed. Then September 3rd, 1986 arrives. Around 4:30 p.m., Cindy walks into a raid that has already put Dorr on the couch and soon puts her there too. Dorr calls it a 10-man search, and Cindy remembers men in the kitchen, the living room, everywhere. At first, nobody explains much. Even the basic question of who lives there gets folded into warrants, affidavits, and Dorr's kept copies. What starts as stolen-car paperwork becomes a memory of fear, confusion, and cooperation that may not have protected anyone.
