How Mature is your Marketing? (part 1: Brand, Demand, Expand)

·25 min·1 clip
The hardest jump is moving from “intent aware” to “revenue aligned,” where segmentation and ICP decisions finally become operational.
Schinella frames the maturity model as a way to give more teeth to the brand, demand, expand work Refine Labs has already done. The goal is to pull marketing into the organization and line it up with outcomes that matter, using both quantitative and qualitative pieces in the operating model. Brand is treated as a strategic growth lever. In the reactive stage, brand work has no ICP research, product-first messaging, and indifferent buyers. Intent aware teams are more defined, but still not truly segmented and not tightly tied to buyer outcomes. Revenue aligned is the more developed stage: there is clarity, alignment, segmentation, a better handle on champions and influencers, and sales can explain the company more clearly. Thought leadership starts to work at both the executive and brand levels. Expand sits under the same model as the place where brand trust can be extended into new products and broader category definitions. Market driven is the highest brand stage in the framework. At that point the feedback loop is continuous, ICP definition has governors built in, and brand can help lower CAC over time while expanding category definition. On demand, the reactive stage depends too much on branded search or gated content, especially thin gated content. In that state CAC is volatile, attribution is weak, executives do not trust the numbers, and demand is captured opportunistically rather than shaped deliberately. The more mature version leans on segmentation and signals instead of a broad media and targeting approach. The episode closes by returning to the hardest jump in the model, moving from intent aware to revenue aligned, and inviting listeners to compare their own GTM structure against the framework.
