An Exercise in Fatality (1974) - Columbo Spoilers! #576
·1 hr 31 min·3 clips
The spoiler rules get negotiated out loud. A simple question about Alana's book turns into a very Spoilers kind of argument about mystery manners, sales plugs, and where people should buy books. Nobody wants to blow the whodunit. They do want the Spoilers family to read it, ideally through Bookshop.org and independent stores instead of Amazon. Then Wendy becomes the room's puzzle. The panel does not flatten her into a villain. They treat her as tangled, sincere, and maybe a little lost. She believes in free love. She also checks the I Ching and tarot, which gives the room plenty to joke about without losing the thread of sympathy. Then Columbo takes over again. The middle of An Exercise in Fatality comes across as a run of leads, side doors, and small motive clues. Jason brings up Gene's ex-wife, whose information gives Columbo a better sense that Milo has something to hide and a lot to tidy up. The wine-in-the-face moment starts to feel less like random dinner drama and more like pressure showing through. Josh's boxing scene is already worn out, and the panel laughing about the clip being played is peak Spoilers: the show catching itself in the act. The ending swerves again. A question about Paul Simon somehow gets to Alana's high school, Kodachrome, and a signed Simon and Garfunkel poster. It is not tidy. It is book talk, murder logic, and Columbo detection all bumping elbows until the episode chants itself out.
