Wisdom vs Folly ! (Ecclesiastes 9 : 13 - 10 : 20)

·30 min·3 clips

How can one dead fly ruin perfume, and what does that reveal about wisdom versus folly in Ecclesiastes?

The episode is a sermon from Southern Cross Church, part of a series working through the book of Ecclesiastes. Host Luke Giles opens by reading Ecclesiastes 10:1-20, highlighting the contrast between wisdom and folly with the metaphor of dead flies spoiling perfume. He frames the discussion in the context of contemporary global crises like wars and political instability, suggesting the world needs divine wisdom but often chooses folly. The host then delves into Ecclesiastes 9, recounting the parable of a poor wise man who saves a city under siege, emphasizing wisdom's superiority over strength and wealth. He notes that wisdom is valuable but vulnerable, easily undone by small acts of folly, as illustrated by the dead fly analogy. The sermon shifts to Ecclesiastes 10, where folly is described as popular but perishing, characterized by a heart leaning away from God. Giles explains that folly is pervasive in modern life, seen in incompetent leadership, careless work, destructive speech, and social media. He argues that folly is self-destructive, using examples like digging a pit and falling into it or using a dull axe. The application focuses on personal heart-leaning, urging listeners to assess whether their hearts lean toward God or away. Giles encourages cultivating wisdom through intentional practices like seeking God's word, choosing wise companions, and anchoring oneself in Christ. He concludes that true wisdom is found in Jesus, who embodies divine wisdom and offers forgiveness for folly. The sermon ends with a prayer for renewal and transformation in Christ.
