Sell Out Your First Batch in 30 Minutes by Building an Audience With No Product to Sell

February 5, 2026·45 min·3 clips
Kendall Kranzdorf sold out her first batch of Cotto whipped cottage cheese dip in 30 minutes after building an audience with no product to sell.
The product was still early. Kendall talks through building Cotto on social media, using posts to test packaging ideas and listen to customers before everything looked finished. The audience was already there. By the time she put the first batch on Shopify, hundreds of people were rooting for the protein packed whipped cottage cheese dip. Then it sold out in 30 minutes. That sellout gives the story its spark, but the more useful part is the messy middle: manufacturing was still being worked out, and the packaging still had to get sharper. Serena stays close to that. She points out how fresh the business is, jokes that founder years feel longer, and lets the uncertainty sit in the room instead of smoothing it over. The practical center is packaging. Kendall says a shopper may give a product only three seconds, so the front of the package has to say what matters right away. Protein needed to show up more clearly. Her first version had the protein callout, but it was small enough to disappear into the design, so the next version made it harder to miss. Color may be part of the next round. She is already thinking about whether that callout needs a different color, because a tiny design choice can decide whether someone understands the product at all. The category makes this harder. Cotto is a cottage cheese based dip in a shelf set without many easy comparisons, so the package has to do extra work. Trial does not automatically turn into purchase. Kendall says people will taste it and still not buy, which leaves her sorting out what the product or package failed to make clear in that moment. Cottage cheese helps and hurts. She wants to reach people who already love it without scaring off people who think they do not.

As heard by us

A practical early-founder case on using social demand to test packaging, positioning, and a first product drop.

Shopify Masters catches Kendall Kranzdorf at a useful, unusually early point in Cotto's life: a whipped cottage cheese dip had social media demand before the product, packaging, and manufacturing were fully sorted. The strongest idea is audience before inventory.
