Episode 125: The Wolf-Man

October 31, 2025·1 hr 48 min·5 clips
The script opens with Lawrence witnessing his mother's suicide. The film completely changes this opening scene.
Kieran and Xander spend the episode inside an early Wolf-Man draft. They begin with why Xander was a strong fit for the conversation, then settle into the script itself. The approach is practical. Rather than treating the movie as a fixed object, they keep asking what changed between the draft and the version that reached screens. Sir John is a major part of that discussion. The script keeps him active, tied to John, and starting to build more of a connection with Lawrence, which the hosts read as a smart way to keep a key original-film presence in play without simply copying the old structure. That leads into the unfinished house. Lawrence takes Gwen to the site, where villagers have been helping him work on it in exchange for gunfiring lessons, and the hosts clearly enjoy how unexpectedly sweet that stretch feels. They like the small beat where Gwen kisses his cheek. They also laugh at Lawrence’s immediate sadness after she goes inside. The episode then shifts into the night sequence. Both characters wake to strange sounds, spot Sir John wandering into the woods, and follow him as the story bends away from the path the finished film takes. That part is a mixed bag for them. They think the scene is more interesting here than in the completed movie, even if the draft version does not quite go anywhere on its own. The search ends near the family cemetery and his mother’s mausoleum. From there, the conversation keeps teasing out what the scene is building toward, and Xander notes that it sets up something in the third act before moving on. There is also a thread about Crow Munford Lloyd and how the script keeps that original-film energy alive in a different shape. By the end, the talk lands on Rick Baker’s werewolf makeup. They call it a knockout and the kind of modern monster design that still stands beside the 1941 version without embarrassment. Xander even brings in Baker’s unused Creature from the Black Lagoon design, which only sharpens the praise.
