Income Tax Relief And Tips

·21 min·2 clips
Tax expert Puvani Rajagopal reveals the hidden deadline extension and automatic RM9,000 relief every Malaysian taxpayer gets.
The episode begins with host Jake Lim introducing tax season urgency and guest Puvani Rajagopal, a tax partner. Puvani first clarifies deadlines: BE forms are due April 30, extendable to May 15, while partnerships have a June 30 deadline. She explains the automatic RM9,000 personal relief and exceptions for non-residents. Reliefs for spouses (RM4,000 if not working), children (RM4,000 for under 18, RM8,000 for university), and childcare (RM3,000 maximum) are covered. SSPN relief requires an RM8,000 year-end balance. Parental care relief is RM8,000, including a RM1,000 medical check-up allocation from 2024. Medical expense relief applies to life-threatening diseases like cancer, with mental illness recently added. Lifestyle relief includes RM1,000 for sports fees and RM2,500 for books, devices, and courses. After a break, Puvani advises first-time taxpayers to check TIN numbers via MyTax and keep receipts for seven years as soft copies. She warns against claiming without receipts. Payment options include credit card installments or IRB plans with a 10% penalty. If employers delay EA forms, salary slips can be used. Mistakes can be amended online from April 1 for BE forms. Penalties can reach 45% of tax payable but are negotiable at IRB branches. Unpaid taxes may lead to travel bans, checkable via immigration websites, with temporary releases possible.
