Ep 6: Sure Gonna Miss You

September 8, 2020·53 min·4 clips
At age 10, Jackee's mother told her in a counselor's office that her father was not on a boat but in prison for murder.
The first image is plain and bleak. The host returns to the Esquire Motor Inn, to the room where her family ended up after the U.S. Marshals moved them into witness protection. This was not movie protection. The building has been touched up, but her memory drags it back to what relocation felt like: abrupt and shabby, with no decent explanation. Gerald Schur offers the inside version. He talks about weighing workload, cities, and whether a family could settle somewhere new. Bill Muschi does not buy it. His Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporting found people who said the program felt unfair and uninviting, and not good for everyone involved. That gap gives the episode its charge. From inside the system, placement can sound measured. For a family living under new names, it can feel like being dropped and told to cope. Muschi brings the background of his series, Protected Witness, which grew out of organized-crime coverage in Pittsburgh and the danger around that work. The material gets ugly. He describes a vicious kingpin, threats from the man's family, and attempts to compromise him while he was covering the case. That is why he matters here. He is not brought in as a coolly distant expert. He has seen how secrecy, violence, and official control can blur together. The host keeps returning to the old hurt. The motel room becomes her counterargument to the polished idea that witness protection arrives with order and care. The episode sits in the tension between Gerald Schur's administrative logic and people who felt the program was already failing them.

As heard by us

Witness protection looks more like a shabby relocation than a clean escape.

It opens at the Esquire Motor Inn, where the family ends up in a shabby room with bugs and the difference between movie logic and real life is impossible to miss.
