·35 min·3 clips

How did a 59-year-old Italian quarry worker beat the world's elite ultrarunners to win UTMB twice?

1. Radio Trail Carreras de Montaña host Sergio Mayayo dedicates this episode to Marco Olmo, the Italian ultrarunner who won the UTMB Mont Blanc twice at ages 58 and 59. 2. Mayayo speaks as both journalist and personal witness — he was present in Chamonix in 2008 and met Olmo in the bib-collection queue, and credits Marco's victories with changing his own understanding of mountain racing. 3. The episode's thesis is that Olmo's career demolishes the idea that elite performance belongs only to the young and technologically equipped. 4. Born in 1948 in Piedmont, Italy, Olmo worked as a farmer, truck driver, and quarry machine operator before starting to run at age 27 to decompress after long shifts ending at 2pm. 5. At age 37, Olmo adopted vegetarianism — an unusual choice in 1980s Piedmont — which Mayayo frames as part of Olmo's view that his relationship with nature was vital, not aesthetic. 6. Olmo built his ultrafondo base in the desert: he podiumed at Marathon des Sables in 1996, 1997, and 1999, and reached the top 20 in 15 editions of the race, including a 23rd place at approximately age 66 in 2014. 7. He also won the Desert Marathon of Libya three times and won the Desert Cup in Jordan before transitioning to alpine terrain. 8. His bridge from desert to Alps was the Grand Raid Cro-Magnon (roughly 100km, 4,000m gain), where he won four consecutive editions: 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. 9. Olmo's UTMB debut came in 2005, aged 56, where he finished third behind Vincent Delabarre and Jean-Jacques Jaquerot, only 38 minutes from the win. 10. In 2006 Olmo won the UTMB — while elite runners at the front faded, his constant 'tipi-tapa' pace moved him to first without a single explosive surge, finishing ahead of rivals who had larger media profiles. 11. France initially dismissed the 2006 victory as luck, but Olmo returned in 2007 and won again, aged 59, cementing a double that Mayayo calls 'dominance, not coincidence.' 12. Mayayo attributes Olmo's success not to physical gifts but to mental discipline: Olmo raced against himself rather than rivals, never chasing other runners' rhythms. 13. In 2008, Mayayo was in Chamonix for his own CCC debut when Olmo attempted a third UTMB title but abandoned; Kylian Jornet won his first UTMB in 20:56:59, an hour faster than Olmo's course record. 14. Mayayo describes meeting Olmo in the bib queue — Olmo sitting on the floor next to his wife Renata, speaking to nobody, saying only 'hello' before returning to silence. 15. Olmo's wife Renata is described as the 'sweet half' of the pair, handling public relations while Marco remained reserved and somewhat antisocial. 16. The documentary 'Il Corridore' and the book available on Amazon document Olmo's life from the inside; Olmo is quoted as saying he runs 'as an act of freedom and personal revenge against the rich and famous.' 17. The episode is a solo monologue by Mayayo, delivered in a conversational, reflective tone from Cercedilla; there are no guests or interviews. 18. Mayayo intersperses the biography with personal anecdotes and rhetorical questions, making the format feel like a tribute speech rather than a news report. 19. Trail runners and mountain racers who remember the early 2000s UTMB era or who are interested in late-career performance and longevity. 20. Listeners looking for race tactics, training plans, or current competitive news will not find them here.
