Radiant Reflections

Gifts Without Fear | November 9th, 2025

This episode is a sermon from Radiant Life Church, delivered by Pastor Ryan as part six of the 'In Pursuit of the Spirit' series. Ryan opens by stating the goal to break down barriers around spiritual gifts and help the congregation understand and operate in them biblically. He defines spiritual gifts as 'charismata,' meaning supernatural manifestations of God's grace, and asserts that every believer is charismatic. Ryan identifies two problematic extremes: abuse of gifts, where people seek experiences over God, and neglect of gifts, where people reject their operation today. He emphasizes the need for a balanced, biblical approach where gifts flow healthily. The teaching centers on 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul addresses the messy Corinthian church, noting that the issue is not the gifts but people's wrong attitudes. Ryan lists nine spiritual gifts from the passage: word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. He categorizes these into revelatory gifts (information downloads), power gifts (supernatural power), and utterance gifts (speaking gifts). Ryan shares a personal anecdote about receiving a word of knowledge at a retreat in Wisconsin that addressed his tendency to beat himself up. He explains each gift with definitions, such as prophecy being for edification, exhortation, and comfort, and distinguishes between two types of tongues: a prayer language for personal edification and a language for others to hear. Guest Tammy Chup gives a testimony about discovering her gifts of serving, encouragement, and administration after the loss of her son, highlighting how serving revealed her identity. Ryan critiques over-reliance on online spiritual gift tests, urging prayer and service first. He discusses 1 Corinthians 13's emphasis on love as essential for operating gifts and 1 Corinthians 14's instructions on prophecy and tongues in church settings. Ryan describes another personal experience where a man imparted a word of knowledge about his desire for tongues, leading him to pray in a prayer language. The sermon closes with three reflective questions for the congregation and a corporate prayer for the activation of spiritual gifts, involving laying on of hands.
