#102 The Importance of User-Centricity in Product Development - Panel Discussion @BerlinProduct Conference2023

February 15, 2023·56 min·5 clips
Christian opens with a slightly odd setup. The Product Bakery Podcast was invited to moderate a panel at Berlin Product Conference 2023, and Alex missed it because he was on vacation. The topic is user centricity, but the panel treats that phrase like something teams have to prove in their habits. Henning Witzel is introduced by name. Vamsi Krishna Vupalapati is on the panel too, and the live conference format keeps the answers looser than a studio explainer. The useful tension is collaboration. Product work improves when designers, product managers, and engineers stop guarding the edges of their job titles. One guest says designers need enough business context to know whether an idea can survive outside a mockup. Product managers get pushed away from asking users if they want a feature and toward research that finds demand, friction, and real struggle. Engineers get the most memorable example: put one in a store as a sales associate, with a customer waiting, and a slow receipt flow stops being an abstract delay. It gets uncomfortable, which is why it works. The panel does not throw metrics out. Near the end, they talk about starting small with Amplitude, adding an event, and tracking something the team can actually use. Track everything and the data turns into clutter. Christian keeps it moving, sums things up, nudges the guests, jokes about a dry throat, and lets the examples do the work.

A grounded panel from the Berlin Product Conference 2023, centered on a familiar but still useful point: user centricity only matters when it shows up in day-to-day product work.
