1RPH interview Clemente Program

·29 min·2 clips
What is the Clemente program, and who is this free university-level humanities education for?
What is Clemente for? Mary-Anne Gore opens with the basic question, then leaves room for the answer to come through the people around the Canberra program. Jen Trudinic gives the first clear frame: Clemente is a university level certificate in liberal arts subjects for people whose education has been disrupted by serious barriers. It is not job training, and the episode is pretty firm about that. Sociology, literature, art, and philosophy are treated as ways to widen curiosity and make study feel possible again. The humanities are the point. The guest talks about them less as narrow skills and more as tools for understanding yourself and the world. The classroom, meanwhile, sounds active on purpose. This is not the sleepy dark lecture theatre version of university. It is questions, activities, and discussion. Learning partners do a lot of the close-up work. They bring life experience, sit with readings, help untangle essay questions, and make a first paragraph feel less impossible. The episode also gives existing skills more credit than people may expect. Scrolling online, reading things, writing emails, and gathering information can all become part of academic work. That matters because Clemente does not ask people to arrive already fluent in university culture. The close stays practical, sending listeners to the Vinnies website for the Clemente page and its options for students and volunteers.

As heard by us

Clemente is framed through a basic question of access: what the program offers, who it is for, and how it reaches people whose education has been blocked or interrupted.
