PodCastle 884: TALES FROM THE VAULTS: All of the Cuddles With None of the Pain

·32 min·3 clips
At 17 mind-age and 14 body-age, Jenny posts about a screaming fight with her mother and the physical symptoms — clicking sounds from her belly, sores in her mouth — that appear when they stop loving each other.
The frame is formal. PodCastle gives the date as March 25, 2025, presents J.J. Roth's story, and brings the listener into the flying castle of fantasy fiction. The story itself is much closer to the skin. The tension is not a battle or a quest. It is a fight between a mother and someone who feels almost eighteen, even though her body will not be eighteen for more than three years. Craig lights the fuse. He is the boy from the youth center basketball court, old enough to become forbidden because everyone else can only see the narrator's body. The complaint sounds ordinary at first. The premise is not. The narrator keeps physical age and inward age apart until the family argument starts to feel wrong in more than one way. Mother and child know exactly where to hurt each other. The daughter says her mother should never have become a parent. The mother answers with a kind of remorse that scares her. That lands harder than anger. The narrator can survive being furious, but seeing her mother close to tears opens up guilt she is not ready to handle. Then the wish comes out. She says she wishes she had never been born, and her mother tells her those words are strangely literal in her case. Love turns into proof. Her mother says the narrator is alive because she loved her, which sounds tender and accusing at the same time. Then the body gets involved. The stomach clicks. Sores appear in her mouth. Bumps rise across her scalp. Breathing gets hard. The fantasy works because the details stay practical, the sort of things a frightened teenager would notice first by touch, sound, and breath.

As heard by us

A body-horror family story about anger, shame, and love becoming physically painful.

Podcastle's "All of the Cuddles with None of the Pain" follows a daughter after a fight with her mother, and it turns that conflict into body horror: sores, wheezing, itching, and a body that seems to answer anger in kind.
