Diners, quilts, and awkward mistletoes... some of the best films of the season have arrived

·29 min
Danielle, Aaron Lee, and Samantha open with a lively check-in on the films they’ve watched over the last week. They all agree it was a pretty good week, and Aaron Lee especially singles out Hallmark Mystery’s `A Reason for the Season`, which he finds a lot of fun and better than Netflix’s `A Christmas Inheritance`. The trio also swaps notes on `Cozy Christmas Quilt`. Their confusion over the week’s similar titles becomes part of the joke, especially once they start sorting out which `Jingle Bell` movie landed on which platform. The pace stays loose and conversational. A big stretch of the conversation turns to a Candace Cameron movie, where the hosts argue about the ending’s balloon release, the environmental and animal logic of it, and the odd pairing of that image with a puppy-patrol, dog-shelter storyline. They are not sold on every choice. Even so, they find enough going on to stay interested, notice that the supporting characters feel less flat than usual, and enjoy the older couple at the Cozy Cliffside Inn who cannot hear much but seem delighted anyway. The panel also lands on a broader read of Candace Cameron’s recent holiday work. They think she plays better in a comedic mode, where a little smugness and physicality give the character more spark than the serious roles she has done lately. Visually, they are blunt. The movie still looks like a Gak film to them, and they think it lacks the bright polish and pizzazz that Hallmark usually brings. They do not hate it. Their verdict is basically that it is fine, a little funny, and better when treated as a lightly snarky Christmas movie rather than a prestige take on the genre. Near the end, Samantha gives a quick shoutout to `An Almost Christmas Story` on Disney+. She praises the animation, calls the story sweet, and notes that Christmas sits mostly in the background until the owl reaches New York City inside the tree that will become the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. The recommendation is simple: if you only have half an hour and want something touching, the animated special sounds like the cleanest bet of the bunch. The hosts close by thanking listeners, asking people to rate and follow, and signing off after a cheerful holiday-movie marathon.

As heard by us

A brisk holiday-movie roundup that works best when the hosts keep the focus on sharp reactions.

The roundtable works best when the hosts stay with the reactions instead of drifting into broad holiday talk. The balloon-release gripe lands, the Jingle Bell confusion gives the segment some bite, and the note about Candace Cameron Bray fitting comedy better than anything else…
