Episode 81 – UAW Strike, Illinois EV Batteries and Stupid Baby Names

September 22, 2023·1 hr 30 min·5 clips
He knocked the alternator wire against the exhaust manifold and blew out the 100 amp alternator. That's not fun on that car.
Throwing Wrenches hosts Eric and Daryl discuss current automotive news including UAW strikes, Illinois EV battery manufacturing, and rising new car inventories. Eric works at Fort Stoatopecan Toyota in Pekin, Illinois (founded 1953) and reports 20+ new vehicles arrived in the past week (Venzas, Camrys, new Crown, most models, waiting on GR Corolla). Daryl shares a car collecting passion, describing his acquisition of a pristine 1996 Celica convertible (25th anniversary edition, 56,000 miles, full service history) for $5,000 at an estate sale in February 2022. It sat in the garage for 18 months until recently when his wife Angela suggested using it. Daryl's son took the green Celica to college; the battery failed en route. Unable to find alternators locally on Labor Day, they sourced one from Chicago and performed a DIY swap, though the son accidentally short-circuited it. Daryl's black Celica is now in the shop with typical 1990s Toyota timing cover seal leaks, oil pump, and water pump issues. The episode captures the realities of classic car ownership, local business relationships, and father-son mechanical learning.
