Jesus tells Peter he will deny him three times before the rooster crows, despite Peter's insistence he would never.
The episode begins with Jesus sending two disciples to fetch a donkey and colt for his entry into Jerusalem, fulfilling prophecy. Crowds welcome him with palm branches and shouts of 'Hosanna.' Later, Judas Iscariot agrees to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. During the Last Supper, Jesus predicts his betrayal and institutes the Eucharist. He then goes to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he prays in anguish while the disciples sleep. Judas arrives with a crowd and betrays Jesus with a kiss, leading to his arrest. Jesus is taken before the high priest Caiaphas, where false witnesses accuse him, and he affirms he is the Messiah. Peter denies knowing Jesus three times before the rooster crows, as predicted. Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, who questions him and offers to release either Barabbas or Jesus. The crowd demands Barabbas and calls for Jesus's crucifixion. Pilate washes his hands, symbolically declaring innocence, and the crowd accepts responsibility. Jesus is mocked, scourged, and crucified at Golgotha. On the cross, he cries out 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' and dies. The temple veil tears, an earthquake occurs, and tombs open. Joseph of Arimathea buries Jesus in a new tomb. The chief priests and Pharisees secure the tomb with a guard, fearing the disciples might steal the body.
