Govt 8: Graduation LIVE!

A BLS worker checks the price of romaine hearts and a size 15 boys cotton shirt to measure inflation.
First, the housekeeping. The show flags President Trump saying he is firing Lisa Cook, sends listeners to The Indicator, and promises a longer Planet Money treatment soon. Then the tassel turns. The summer school finale becomes a live graduation at the Bell House, with a very Planet Money honorary degree. The lesson is trust, which sounds grand until Erica gets on the phone. She collects jobs numbers, and since the pandemic, more people push back. Some distrust the government enough to yell at the person asking for numbers, then call back later to apologize. Big fights over politics and the economy suddenly become one worker absorbing all that frustration through a headset. Planet Money pulls back from there. The show says it has spoken with just about every living former head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and talks regularly with people at Census, Commerce, and the Federal Reserve. Their view is careful: the numbers have not yet been contaminated by politics, the process is transparent, and it has worked roughly the same way for decades. Still, trust can crack fast. So the cheesy graduation bit lands. The honorary degree goes to thousands of federal data workers across more than a dozen agencies. Answer the surveys, respect the professionals, and do not treat government statistics like they hold themselves up by magic.
