Gunsmoke - Sarah's Search

March 14, 2026·25 min·2 clips
Sarah Howell rejects the man Dillon brings her and reveals she has been waiting for a soldier killed in the Civil War decades earlier.
The episode opens with Marshal Dillon and Chester on the road from Park City, where they find Sarah Howell from Wichita stranded with a broken buggy wheel. She has traveled alone — unusual in that era — to find her fiancé Guy Porter, who she describes as tall, young, and fair-haired. Dillon notes something uncertain about her story but agrees to help. Back in Dodge City, Chester recounts the story to Kitty at the Long Branch saloon while a young farmer named Rance Mattson listens and asks suspicious questions about where Sarah is staying. Rance goes to warn a man named Joe, a criminal from Wichita who apparently stole money there and realizes Sarah may identify him to the marshal. Joe plans to deal with the problem that night. Sarah, unaware of any danger, takes an evening stroll from her boarding house, remembering walks she used to take with Guy. Joe and Rance intercept her in the dark and attack her. Doc reports Sarah barely alive, delirious and calling for Guy. Kitty, troubled by the brutality against a seemingly harmless woman, helps Dillon piece together that Rance was asking about Sarah earlier. Dillon and Chester ride to the Mattson farm, where Rance runs on sight and is shot in the leg to halt his escape. Joe is found wounded inside. Dillon takes both men into custody. He then returns to Doc's to confront Sarah with the prisoner they believe is her fiancé. Sarah looks at the rough, middle-aged outlaw and immediately rejects him: Guy is young, she says, only a couple years older than her. Doc takes Dillon aside to explain: a War Department telegraph sent years earlier confirmed Guy Porter was killed in action during the Civil War. Sarah received the news but was never able to believe it. She has been waiting for a dead man for decades. The episode closes with Chester marveling at how a person could carry that kind of grief, and Dillon noting quietly that Doc doesn't think her mind will recover.

As heard by us

A sturdy Western case that ends in quiet sympathy.

Sarah's Search starts with a Western problem and settles into a bruised story about waiting too long for an answer. A woman from Wichita crosses paths with Matt Dillon and Chester, while another thread follows the marshal to a boardinghouse where Miss Howe is still looking for…
