S2 Ep3 - Deja Vu

·39 min·3 clips
The Valerian wants to turn all art and life into mindless husks—can the adventurers stop it?
The adventurers Axel, Marcus, Mal, Sam, and Josh awaken in a desert loop, greeted again by the spectral Lucas. Lucas explains they are trapped in the chained realm of Ataxis, repeating events. He states their escape requires helping a nomadic tribe called the Undying Light "find peace" to avoid becoming mindless husks. Lucas describes a great evil called the Valerian, which exists in the desert and in the collective imagination as abandoned ideas and dark thoughts. The Valerian seeks to devastate all life through a process called "the Sorrowing," using henchmen like the Vargan and a figure named Allister. Lucas claims the Undying Light tribe is currently being targeted by this Sorrowing. He gives the group a single gold coin and a small bag of herb before vanishing. The party resets with full health and resources, finding themselves back at the caravan of the Undying Light. They are greeted by guards Hilroy, Mika, Sonora, and Glenn, who take them to Queen Rehana. Inside her large tent, the sacred candle from their previous disastrous encounter is present but uncovered. Queen Rehana explains her tribe's purpose is to keep the candle lit forever, a task passed down for about twenty years. The adventurers learn the tribe often hunts fire snakes for their valuable eggs and hearts. When asked about giants, Rehana and her four advisors grow tense, with one older man whispering to her. The advisors debate the party's trustworthiness; Carol and the older man suspect them of being spies, while others are more welcoming. Queen Rehana ultimately grants the party shelter and freedom to move within the caravan, requesting their help with an upcoming move to a new oasis. Axel attempts to offer the queen some of Lucas's herb, which is unrecognizable to her. Marcus privately confides in Josh about his resentment toward Lucas, who achieved the musical fame Marcus wanted. The episode ends with the party leaving the tent to navigate the camp, each character processing the loop and their cryptic mission differently. The tone is a conversational and immersive actual-play narrative, blending tense mystery with character-driven moments and surreal humor. Listeners who enjoy intricate fantasy mysteries, time-loop scenarios, and party dynamics with personal stakes will appreciate this episode. Those preferring straightforward combat or dungeon-crawling sessions might find the puzzle-heavy, dialogue-focused progression slower.

As heard by us

A desert reset keeps Lucas, the guards, and Marcus's frustration in uneasy rotation.

Season two's third chapter drops the party back into the same desert after the caravan, the sacred candle, and the titan have already wrecked their escape. The reset is messier than tidy, and that works here.
